How We Remove Rats From The Attic

There are many unique situations when it comes to removing rats from the attic in Hernando County. Most of the time removing rats is a straightforward process.

Our Straightforward process of removing rats from the attic:

1. Find the areas the rats are going in and out of the attic and seal them.
   • We use only metal based material to seal the rat entry points, preferably steel. This prevents rats from chewing through and ending back up in the attic.
2. Inspect the attic to see where the rat activity has been and set rat traps in those areas.
   • We check all ductwork, a common highway system for rats. Then we find the trails and tunnels rats create in the insulation.
3. Continue trapping until the rat population is gone. Could be a 1-3 week process with no obstacles. During this process we also:
   • Check areas that were sealed to make sure they didn’t chew through.
   • Check the entire property to make sure there are no new rat holes as sometimes they will create new openings.
   • Record the amount of rats being caught and removed. We want to see the count less and less on each visit.
   • Ask the customer what they have been experiencing since last visit.
4. Once traps are all still baited and set, and the customer is no longer hearing the activity, we sanitize the attic and entry points.
   • This removes a lot of the bacteria left behind by the rat urine and feces.
   • This also removes the rat scent or pheromones from the attic and entry points.

Sometimes there are different obstacles that can make removing rats from the attic difficult…

1. Waiting to remove rats from the attic.
   • This allows rats to store food in the attic. When rats store food in the attic, they tend to not go to the traps we set even if the entry points are sealed.
   • This allows the rat population to increase in size, making the job require more visits to remove them.
2. Not removing other food sources from where the rats can get to.
   • This is common for homes in Hernando County, as many people use their garage as storage and the access to the attic is in the garage. Rats can eat a lot of every day items including kitty litter, pet feces, car parts, plastic containers, and more. We want to make sure this potential rat food is cleared out during the process.
3. Rats coming up from the sewers. Fortunately, this is not too common to Hernando County homes but it’s worth mentioning.
   • Sometimes when adding an addition to a home, some Hernando County contractors will not secure the end of an old sewer pipe that they cut correctly. This allows any rat that happens to be in the sewers access to the attic or the wall.
   • Finding this pipe and securing it is necessary to stop the rodent population from continuing.

How We Remove Dead Rats

Steps To Remove Dead Rat From Attic.

1. Identify where in the attic the dead rat is located.
   • This can be done by finding the area of the home where the smell is the strongest.
2. Go in the attic and follow the dead rat smell until you find the general location.
   • Sometimes the dead rat may be resting in an easy spot above the insulation.
3. Remove insulation until the dead rat is found.
   • Make sure to wear gloves.
4. Sanitize the space where the dead rat was.
   • This kills the bacteria left behind by the carcass.
   • This also help to kill any maggots, flies, fleas, or bugs left behind.

How To Remove Dead Rat From Wall.

1. You want to start out with the steps 1-2 above in the “Remove Dead Rat From Attic” section.
   • If you go into the attic and the smell is less strong then it was in the house this will tell you it’s in a wall.
2. Sometimes it’s possible to see the location of the dead rat from the attic.
   • You should be able to see into most of the walls from the attic.
   • Find the wall containing the dead rat by smelling any wall access you can find.
3. If you find the location of the dead rat from the attic.
   • Take a picture of where it is and of where you are in the attic.
4. If you cannot find the location of the dead rat from the attic.
   • Go back to the area in the house where the smell was the strongest.
5. Cut a small hole in the wall.
   • About a half inch in diameter closest to the smell.
6. Use the endoscope to find the exact location of the dead rat.
   • Endoscopes are cameras used to capture images in hard to reach areas.
7. Cut a rectangular shaped piece out of the wall.
   • Make sure it’s only big enough for your hand to get in.
8. Remove the dead rat carcass and the remains as much as you can.
9. Sanitize inside the wall with an antimicrobial treatment.
   • This helps mask the smell and kill the bacteria left behind.
   • The smell should go away within 1-3 hours.
10. Repair the cut in the wall.

Steps To Remove Dead Rat From Crawlspace. Crawlspaces aren’t very common in the Hernando County area fortunately.

1. From inside the home, find the area where the dead rat smell is the strongest.
2. Access the crawlspace and follow the smell to the general location.
   • Usually you will see the dead rat when you get close to it.
3. If you do not see the dead rat, remove any objects or materials it could have crawled under before it died.
4. Remove the rat carcass and any remains left behind.

3. The vapor barrier is supposed to be sealed completely.
   • Check for any chewed-through areas while following the smell of the dead rat.
4. Remove the dead rat carcass and any remains left behind.
5. Sanitize the area with an antimicrobial treatment.
   • This helps mask the smell and kill the bacteria left behind. The smell should go away within 1-2 hours, depending on ventilation of the skirting on the mobile/manufactured home.

Removing Rats From Under Mobile & Modular Homes

Hernando County is home to many different mobile and modular homes. Skirting is the only barrier to protect the wires, ac ducts, vapor barrier, insulation, plumbing, structural components, and any stored items.

Most skirting in Hernando County is made up of Vinyl due to is low cost and easy install. Unfortunately, the vinyl material cracks and chips over time. This cracking can be caused by weather, age, or accidental damage, like hitting with a weed trimmer. Once the areas are open, this is an invitation for rats to make nests underneath.

Skirting also only rests on top of the ground in most cases we’ve seen in Hernando County. This allows rats to dig holes right underneath the rail supporting the skirting and go right under the home to nest.

How We Remove Rats From Under Mobile & Modular Homes

1. Remove any material that may be in the way of the skirting.
   • Stacked bricks
   • Wires coming out from the bottom
   • Lattice
2. Dig a 6-8 inch trench anywhere where the bottom of the skirting meets the ground.
   • This will prevent rats from being able to tunnel back under
3. Measure the height and width of the area to be sealed with stainless steel hardware clothe 3/4 inch.
   • 3/4 inch is too small for rats to get their teeth around
   • Cut around any pipes or wires that couldn’t be disconnected
4. Fasten the hardware clothe, top then bottom.
   • Fasten the top to the area directly above the skirting with screws
   • Force the bottom in the trench in a U-shaped form. The very bottom should be facing you
5. Fill in the trench that was dug out all the way around the skirting.
   • For extra barrier, before you fill, apply spray foam to the U-shaped area of the hardware clothe. This will mix with the dirt and harden.
6. Place material that was moved in step 1 back to its original location.
   • Re-stack bricks
   • Re-connect wires
   • Re-attach lattice
7. Set traps to remove any rats remaining under the home.
   • 2-3 weeks of rat trapping depending on the infestation size
8. Sanitize the area with an anti-microbial treatment
   • Removes the rat pheromone scent from underneath
   • Kills bacteria left behind by rat feces and urine
