   • Soffit is the most common area squirrels will use to enter into the attic in Hernando County.
   • Look for small and large openings or hanging soffit pieces.
2. Inspect the attic to see where the squirrel activity has been.
   • We check all ductwork, wires, and plumbing for any damage.
3. Place a squirrel one-way valve on the most used entry point.
   • Make sure you cover any area a squirrel can fit through. Squirrels can fit through any area about the size of a half dollar. Once the squirrel gets their head through, they push the rest of their body through.
   • Set the markers on the squirrel one-way valve to the closed position.
   • Squirrel one-way should stay on the entry point until the markers on the one way valve show the squirrel has passed through.
   • It can take squirrels anywhere from 1-14 days to pass through the one-way valve and be evicted from the property.
4. Seal all other entry points besides the one with the one-way valve.
   • This makes it so the squirrels only option is to leave through the one-way valve.
   • This also makes sure no other critter will enter the property.
5. Once the squirrel is evicted, remove the one-way valve and seal the area.
   • Check attic for any signs of squirrel nests and babies.
6. Once the entire house is sealed, we sanitize the attic and entry points.
   • This removes a lot of the bacteria left behind by the squirrel urine and feces.
   • This also removes the squirrel scent or pheromones from the attic and entry points.

1. Waiting to remove squirrels from the attic.
   • This allows squirrels to store food in the attic. When squirrels store food in the attic, they tend to not go to the one-way valve we set even if all the other entry points are sealed.
2. When squirrels have babies in the attic.
   • One-way valves will sometimes lock the mother squirrel out of the attic.
   • When this happens the squirrel babies must be found and taken out of the attic.

How We Remove Dead Squirrels

Steps To Remove Dead Squirrels From Attic.

1. Identify where in the attic the dead squirrel is located.
   • This can be done by finding the area of the home where the smell is the strongest.
2. Go in the attic and follow the dead squirrel smell until you find the general location.
   • Sometimes the dead squirrel may be resting in an easy spot above the insulation.
   • Other times the dead squirrel may be in the soffit.
3. Remove insulation until the dead squirrel is found.
   • Make sure to wear gloves.
   • Remove all remains.
4. Sanitize the space where the dead squirrel was.
   • This kills the bacteria left behind by the carcass.
   • This also help to kill any maggots, flies, fleas, or bugs left behind.

How To Remove Dead Squirrel From Wall.

1. You want to start out with the steps 1-2 above in the “Remove Dead Squirrel From Attic” section.
   • If you go into the attic and the smell is less strong then it was in the house, this will tell you it’s in a wall.
2. Sometimes it’s possible to see the location of the dead squirrel from the attic.
   • You should be able to see into most of the walls from the attic.
   • Find the wall containing the dead squirrel by smelling any wall access you can find.
3. If you find the location of the dead squirrel from the attic.
   • Take a picture of where it is and of where you are in the attic.
4. If you cannot find the location of the dead squirrel from the attic.
   • Go back to the area in the house where the smell was the strongest.
5. Cut a small hole in the wall.
   • About a half inch in diameter closest to the smell.
6. Use the endoscope to find the exact location of the dead squirrel.
   • Endoscopes are cameras used to capture images in hard to reach areas.
7. Cut a rectangular shaped piece out of the wall.
   • Make sure it’s only big enough for your hand to get in.
8. Remove the dead squirrel carcass and the remains as much as you can.
9. Sanitize inside the wall with an antimicrobial treatment.
   • This helps mask the smell and kill the bacteria left behind.
   • The smell should go away within 1-3 hours.
10. Repair the cut in the wall.

Steps To Remove Dead Squirrel From Crawlspace. Crawlspaces aren’t very common in the Hernando County area fortunately. Squirrels Are Not Usually Found In Crawlspaces.

1. From inside the home, find the area where the dead squirrel smell is the strongest.
2. Access the crawlspace and follow the smell to the general location.
   • Usually you will see the dead squirrel when you get close to it.
3. If you do not see the dead squirrel, remove any objects or materials it could have crawled under before it died.
4. Remove the squirrel carcass and any remains left behind.
5. Sanitize the area with an antimicrobial treatment.

2. If you do not see the dead squirrel on the ground or under any material under the mobile, check the vapor barrier.
3. The vapor barrier is supposed to be sealed completely.
   • Check for any ripped-through areas while following the smell of the dead squirrel.
4. Remove the dead squirrel carcass and any remains left behind.
5. Sanitize the area with an antimicrobial treatment.
   • This helps mask the smell and kill the bacteria left behind.
   • The smell should go away within 2-3 hours, depending on ventilation of the skirting on the mobile/manufactured home.

   • Contractor bags mask the smell because of their thickness.
2. Put on gloves and place dead squirrel carcass in contractor bag.

Removing Squirrels From Under Mobile & Modular Homes

Hernando County is home to many different mobile and modular homes. Skirting is the only barrier to protect the wires, ac ducts, vapor barrier, insulation, plumbing, structural components, and any stored items.

Most skirting in Hernando County is made up of Vinyl due to is low cost and easy install. Unfortunately, the vinyl material cracks and chips over time. This cracking can be caused by weather, age, or accidental damage, like hitting with a weed trimmer. Once the areas are open, this is an invitation for squirrels to make nests underneath. Although finding squirrels under mobile/modular homes is not common, it could happen.

Skirting also only rests on top of the ground in most cases we’ve seen in Hernando County. This allows squirrels to dig holes right underneath the rail supporting the skirting and go right under the home to nest.

How We Remove Squirrels From Under Mobile & Modular Homes

1. Remove any material that may be in the way of the skirting.
   • Stacked bricks.
   • Wires coming out from the bottom.
   • Lattice.
2. Dig a 6-8 inch trench anywhere where the bottom of the skirting meets the ground.
   • This will prevent squirrels from being able to tunnel back under.
3. Measure the height and width of the area to be sealed with stainless steel hardware clothe 3/4 inch.
   • Hardware clothe is strong enough to keep squirrels and any wildlife out from under the home.
   • Cut around any pipes or wires that couldn’t be disconnected.
4. Fasten the hardware clothe, top then bottom.
   • Fasten the top to the area directly above the skirting with screws.
   • Force the bottom in the trench in a U-shaped form. The very bottom should be facing you.
5. Fill in the trench that was dug out all the way around the skirting.
   • For extra barrier, before you fill, apply spray foam to the U-shaped area of the hardware clothe. This will mix with the dirt and harden.
6. Place material that was moved in step 1 back to its original location.
   • Re-stack bricks.
   • Re-connect wires.
   • Re-attach lattice.
7. Set one-way valve to remove any squirrels remaining under the home.
   • 1-2 weeks of squirrel one-way valve install will remove any amount of squirrels from underneath.
8. Sanitize the area with an anti-microbial treatment.
   • Removes the squirrel pheromone scent from underneath.
   • Kills bacteria left behind by squirrel feces and urine.
